I always choose what gear I want and how long I want it..

That said, the 4.7 auto isn't too bad.

But nothing can fail causing a manual transmission to have a mind of it's own. People with automatics litter internet forums with trannys that wont shift, stick in certain gears, torque convertors that slip or wont lock, ect.

Manuals can and do fail, don't get me wrong, but at least I don't have to put up with that garbage.

isnt the B&M auto rachet shifter the same thing as what i;m doing with the column shifter?

The installation of a B&M shifter improves the driving experience. By being able to drive the vehicle by shifting quickly up and down through the gears the driver can maximize the engines torque curve. A B&M automatic shifter creates driver control that is similar to that of a manual transmission shifter if desired. The driver also has the choice to leave the shifter in “drive” and allow the vehicle to shift normally.

go watch youtube videos of 3g rams, they all do the column shifting with the autos. im not worried about it.

well the speed limit in my town is anywhere between 35 and 50 depending on the street. i saw that once i got up to speed the tranny would shift through 1 or 2 gears to get into o/d and i would cruise at like 1300 rpm. then i would get on the gas to accelerate and it would pretty rapidly downshift 2 or 3 gears within a few seconds (if not less). it just did not feel right to me. so i tried drivin with o/d off and its so much better. the throttle response is better because it will only downshift one gear when i get on the gas. plus i feel like shifting that many gears that fast and that often causes unnecessary wear on the tranny. so unless i am on the highway doin 65 or more, o/d is off for me

Thanks for all the replies though, still pretty hard to narrow it down haha.

I'm not in any rush to get a truck just yet, but I'm not waiting any longer that mid July!

I'll keep ya posted.

Cheers!
