Upper plenum doesn't have any signs of oil.
(Did the upper gasket 2 yrs ago with the improved kit).
That pinging happens with 87 octane. On mid-grade,
still pings but not as bad. On premium, little to none occurs.
With gas costing so much, at 15 miles a gallon, HOW does
anybody foot a gas bill like this??
318, ext. cab 4x4. I carry nothing extra in that truck. Not even a pen!
Tires are at max on inflation. I ease into the gas from stops like I'm carrying
a bed full of glass. Anyway to get rid of that pinging other than premium??

 

try a 180 tstat. and colder range plugs.

 

I run a 91 tune on my 5.2 and run 89 gas with no pinging at all.

180 degree t-stat and a set of Autolite 3923's were the only thing that got rid of the ping for my truck. I started out though by having a shop do a forced induction fuel cleaning service first. 3M makes a kit you can buy at Autzone to do that at home but I have no idea whether it works.

I guess I had 60,000 miles on my truck when I did the 180 tstat and 3923's. I had tried a few different plugs and even different Autolite plug part numbers, only the 3923's worked at eliminating the ping. I used 3923's exclusively until my last tune up a few months ago. I decided to try NGK's in the stock heat range. The wierd thing is my truck runs great on the NGK's, I have over 144,000 miles on it now and the ping is still gone even though I am not using 3923's. I have no idea how or why but I am not asking any questions.
