R/R the whole system is your best bet that way you fix the whole system FOR SURE my 98 Dakota had so many small things wrong with it the thing is 12 years old a complete R/R is the only way to be sure it will give you COLD not COOL air.
But one thing you may have is cab air infiltration those seals have rotted out also this means removing the dash and replacing those seals NOT a cheap thing to do at $900 or higher just to replace $20 in seals that is why fixing these old Dakotas A/C can be EXPENSIVE AS ALL HELL.

These cab seals do let a lot of hot outside air inside the cab so even if you completely R/R the system you could just get cool A/C not COLD A/C like your problem.

Don’t be scared to do the work yourself believe me it’s not that hard to do I just said all these shops don’t have a clue it’s up to me.
And they charge a Ton of money for crappy work

I use to do alot of ac work when it was r12.When i bought this truck she told me that she had replaced the AC system.I believe her cause when I got it it would blow cold smoke if you put it on low.
