A C on my 1998 dakoda
The A C on my dakoda gets cool but it won't get cold like the one on my 04 dakoda.I put gages on it and it says its full of freon so i don't know what it could be.Any Ideas?
Sounds like my 98 Dakota I did a complete R/R of my AC some of the problem is under the dash the seals may be gone especially if the dash was ever removed for any repairs the jack *** mechanics will not replace the seals to lazy so you get outside air infiltration causing your problem.
R/R the AC in a small block 4 cylinders is easy to do but if you have a V8 go to a shop.
Most AC shops are clowns and don’t care unless you demand good work I know I went to a dozen shops and they all didn’t know what the problem was.

A trick I find works on funky cool settings is quickly flip the selector switch back and forth a few times then to the setting you want not sure why this works but it does same with the temp setting I get cooler air after doing the flipping back and forth and I find don’t set it to the high setting just back it off a tad gets you cooler air.
I think the switches get a bit worn out and the cables a bit stretched this is why this trick works.
On the mechanical side your A/C Orifice Tube could be plugged and need replacing or your A/C Receiver Drier / Accumulator needs replaced especially in older Dakotas they should be replaced every 3 years to get the best out of your A/C.
Sometimes it’s best to purge the old Freon and install all new Freon but beware this removes the oil needed to lubricate the system so a shop is best for that job and if you lost your Freon in a leak and just installed new Freon means you are low on needed oil to keep it running.

It feels cold at the vent, but its like its not enough to cool the cab.Its comfortable but it does not get cold like my 04.I'm thinking maybe to hot outside. plus the truck is black seems to be a hotter color than my blue one.I've checked the freon and it shows full. Its hard to find someone to check it cause like y'all say most of them don;t know what they are doing. I just started a new job after being laid off after 35 years at the old job.So money is tight right now so i guess i;ll just to live with for now at least the truck is running good now. Thanks for all the replies.

To get more cool air to me the driver I plug up the passenger side air vent just pop off the outlet and insert a sponge like the big ones for washing your car or whatever you want in the vent this causes more air to be directed to the driver.
Another is to clean the A/C Condenser it should be in front of the radiator and looks like a radiator it could be somewhat clogged by road bugs so power wash out all the bugs lodged in it so air can pass through it faster thus cooler A/C.

Is your fan belt or serpentine belt nice and tight if too loose it could be slipping and causing the A/C to not work at its best these are under high pressure and need to be that way to work their best I think 100Lb pressure.

On older Dakotas there are a number of things that can cause weak cool A/C the answer they are old sorry but that’s the truth.
Such as lost seals in the dash they rot after time causing outside hot air inside the cab, weak Freon seals, weak old or damaged compressor, old Freon, bad seal at the Freon install port causing loss of Freon, your system may be low on oil in the system, Freon has become weak with Freon leak test chemicals, A/C Orifice Tube getting plugged up, A/C Receiver Drier / Accumulator not working anymore too old to do its job anymore, many many more things could be going on.

sorry
