89 Octane gas
I just read on another forum a guy posted how he gets better power and a few more MPG when he uses 89 octane Mid-Grade gas instead of regular 87 octane. His car is a 4-banger Toyota Camry though, nothing like our trucks. I am curious if anyone here runs 89 octane and if so did you or do you now get any increased power, better gas mileage or any other benefits from it? Any problems with it, other than it costs more? I have always used 87 but if 89 will help my truck run better and get a few more MPG it would make the extra cost worth it. Thanks.

i have to run 89 or higher, if i can afford it i run 91. or swich ever other tank between 91 and 89. only b.c of my tune. ran 85.5 once on it and it sounded like my motor was about to grenade. more power...yes, better mpg....no.
Thanks for the info. I may try 89 on my next few tanks, I will need to buy gas again probably in the next few days. I track my gas mileage on www.fuelly.com so I should be able to compare the results. As far as power goes I guess I have to rely on the old butt-dyno for that.
Thanks for the help.

You have to enter the new amount of fuel you buy each time at each subsequent fill-up. I always get a receipt, it shows the amount of gallons of fuel I buy, the price and the total cost. Then I write the mileage down on the receipt before I even leave the gas station. When I get home I enter the info on fuelly and it calculates the MPG for me, plus it keeps a running record and a graph of how I am doing on MPG. It's a good web site to use to track MPG and what you spend on gas. I guess if you had several fill-ups with consistently less MPG then the fuelly info might tip you off that there could be a problem with your truck.

I am going to try a tank of mid grade gas today when I fill up. I think the midgrade at 7-11 is 91 octane. I know it was 14 cents more per gallon yesterday on their sign out by the road. I am willing to spend a couple of extra bucks to see if there is any improvement. My gf and I are going on about a 40 mile round trip today so I hope to have at least some butt-dyno performance results to post when I get home.
