Default Oil capacity 4.7 with fl1a filter

I changed the oil for the first time in my 04 Club Cab, and I decided to use a Motorcraft FL1A filter for the extra half pint or so in capacity.

I put in six quarts but it only came up to "ADD". I figured 6.25 or 6.5 would do it, but I wound up putting in seven full quarts and it's still not showing as completely full.

I'm assuming the dipstick is mismarked, but I thought I'd check to see if anybody else runs an FL1A on their 4.7 and might have run into this before.

Thanks! Carl

Never heard of someone running a Motorcraft filter on a 4.7, since it's a Ford filter in all. I wouldn't go putting in more than 7 qts. Did you wait awhile before checking, because it's not going to instantly end up in the pan and get an accurate measurement. I would but in 7, start it and let it run a minute, then check it awhile later.

Well, it's probably overkill since the 4.7 takes six quarts anyway, but I've always run the FL1A in other Dodge engines, like the 3.3 for example. I just like the extra capacity...the FL1A is substantially larger, adds a little bit to your oil capacity and has much more filter material. There's no worries about compatibility, the specs are identical otherwise, 8 psi anti-drainback valve and so on.

I did let it sit for a while...I'm definitely not going to put more than seven quarts in. I was planning to let it sit overnight and notch the dipstick, but first I wanted to see if anyone else was running the FL1A, since this is my first 4.7. My guess is that it really shouldn't have needed more than 6.5.

Filters are filters...threads and seal the same, theyll work. just the guts that differ...sometimes.
More oil could help with keeping it cooler, preventing breakdown yaddayaddayadda...mostly good for towing or harder driving.

I always prefill my filters and let them soak while Im draining, then get as full as possible, install, then youre pump etc gets oil quicker...also helps realize the level faster. Just what I do...

I don't want 7 qts, 6 is already too much. Nobody has deals on 6 qts of oil lol.

^^^ Thats why you have to buy it by the case like I do. $18 for a case of Valvoline premium conventional! 12 Quarts in case = 2 oil changes, so it actually works out very nicely

Farm & Fleet its normally $38 but I wait until they put it on sale as well as a manufacturer rebate. I think I have about 3 full cases sitting in my garage right now.
