Default 3.9L radiator fan swap, mechanical to electric???

I have a 2002 Dakota with a 3.9L V6. The current fan setup is a mechanical fan with a thermo-clutch.

I want to replace it with a electric fan.

I have read the repair and parts manuals and the 4.7L V8 has an electric fan set-up.

Now to my question, has anyone done this swap before... installed a 4.7L efan in place of the 3.9L mechanical?

It looks like the Powertrain Control Module has the control output and all you need to add is the control relay, the fan, and interconnecting wires (fuses).

It even looks like the 3.9L rad has the mounting points for a 4.7L efan.

What do you think????

just skip that and go straight to a taurus or HHR efan mod, they both pull 3000+ CFM. The 4.7 fan is meant as a helper fan I believe.

The 4.7 fan is set up to come on with ac or if you get above 210 degrees. Taurus fan is cheap, most junk yards have them for 20.00.

I had to idea that there was an electric fan in front of the mechanical fan.

So what you are saying is replace both current fans with the Ford fan or remove the mechanical fan and replace it with the Ford electric fan ending up with two electric fans.

3000 CFM... that is pretty intense for an electric fan.

No, the v6 only has a clutch fan. The 4.7 has a clutch primary with an electric secondary.

Look around on here, several articles on doing the HHR and Taurus efan mod. On those cars, the fan is the only thing cooling the radiator, so they flow a high CFM and just happen to be the right size.

That said, you'll also want a dedicated fan controller. I saw one in one of the topics, that was programmable and used the factory temp sensor.

You think 3,000 cfm is good you can always bump up to the mark viii fan that pushes around 5,500 cfm. They will cool anything down but the start up power on them is insane and you need like 8-10 ga wire for the whole setup

in other words, a ford starter solenoid just to run the fan...

Yeah the one write up I saw thats what the guy used. I dont see why you would need a fan that big.

The HHR seems the easiest to get, so that's probably the one I'm gonna go with, with the smart controller.

Yeah they are new but cost about 50.00 thats why I like the taurus fans cause my local junk yard has the whole assembly for 20.00. Plus I love going to the junk yard lol
