Default failed spring in steering column?

since I've apparently managed to fill 1/4 of the front page, I'll add another topic.

some time ago, the spring on the shifter interlock failed. It's the part that unlocks the shifter when you take the key out of the "off/lock" position. I have to reach inside the column (I removed the shifter boot) and push the lock back by hand. Now I don't know if the spring broke (it looks to be in one piece when I peer in), or if the slides and pins need to be oiled, or what. All i know is it gives everybody else fits when they try to drive my truck and can't get out of park. Was hoping maybe somebody knows what I'm talking about.

from the FSM:

Vehicles equipped with an automatic trans- mission and a steering column mounted shifter: an interlock device is located within the steering col- umn. This interlock device is used to lock the trans- mission shifter in the PARK position when the key lock cylinder is in the LOCKED or ACCESSORY position. If it is difficult to rotate the key to or from the LOCK or ACCESSORY position, the interlock device within the steering column may be defective. This device is not serviceable. If repair is necessary, the steering column assembly must be replaced.

The FSM says I can pull the covers off the column without having to remove the airbag/deal with the SRS system. Is this true? Or is only the lower cover removable? I need in the top side of the column.

you can pull the whole steering column apart, both top and bottom covers without disturbing the airbag system.

how does the top come off? I didn't see an explanation in the FSM, but I'll look again

nope, FSM says nothing. but I saw on dak-dur that it's just a T-20 on bottom of the column?

If your messing around with the steering colum it is always good practise to disconnect the negative battery cable just incase some thing happens. Those air bags can do a lot of damage. IMHO:
