Post power steering cleaning of reservoir

Just some info for all

I know that power steering lines can get slime in them and this can cause your power steering to go bad or run sluggish.

On the 2.5L engine the reservoir is external today I drained the reservoir and removed it and removed and replaced the feeder hose.

The inside of the hose was slimy as I suspected but my surprise was the reservoir the inside was just as bad but worse it had a thick coat of heavy slime and tar like build up inside it took me many try’s at cleaning it out but I finished re installed the reservoir and new hose and my power steering is much better.

I don’t know if this is a 2.5L engine problem or not and I don’t know if the V6 or V8 have this slime or not.

Just thought some may find this worth knowing.

do NOT run solvent through the pump under power, it will wreak the pump. solvent doesnt have any oily properties. you could run new oil to clean it, i have done that. i know it seams a wast of oil but its cheaper than a pump. you could use solvent to clean the reservoir wiping by hand .

The V6 has single assembly. Replaced mine last september. Pump and tank are one unit, shaped like a teardrop.

Cool No not what I did

I didnt run anything through the pump just the reservoir I just drained the pump and system and put new fluid in and one bottle of Lucas power steering fluid with conditioners and sealed all up just fine.

The reservoir was all gunked up with slime and tar like crap nasty.

As I said the 2.5L engine Dakotas have a seperate reservoir for the fluid.
