ABS & cruise control in mountains
My Dakota just made a trip to Virginia from Indiana for hurricane relief. Had to take my daughter a grill and a generator since their power was out.
My question is, while driving through the mountains I had my cruise control set. It seems as though the cruise control both speeds the vehicle up and slows it down? I would hold very close to my set speed up and down hill. I stopped to pay a toll on the turnpike and when I left the toll booth my ABS and brake light came on. I made it to a parking lot and crawled under the truck and could not see any problems. When I restarted the truck the lights went out. The only thing I could think of is that the brakes got hot and caused the system to show a fault. I had brakes when the lights were on and after the lights reset there have been no problems.
Does anyone know if this is the case with the cruise maintaining speed whether going up or downhill, and has anyone had this problem.
When I drove home I watched using my cruise control and had no problems at all. This is the first trip I have made in my truck of any distance.
Thanks all.

Cruise control does exactly what you saw, it will try to maintain your speed up and down hill to what you have it set. It won't apply the brakes if that's what your asking, it only operates the throttle. If the throttle is closed and your going down a steep enough hill the truck will accelerate past what you have the cruise control set at.
I use my cruise all the time.
Not sure about the ABS lamp. If it's off then it's cleared the fault. If it happens again the trouble code can be read, by the dealer you need a special scan tool or DRB3, not a regular scan tool.
Hope your daughters doing well in the aftermath.

My truck will slow going downhill also, regardless of how steep it is. I have 4 wheel ABS and I swear it seemed like it was breaking to hold me right where the speed was set. Since it was the first trip across country I have nothing to compare it to.
Like I said, I had no problems coming home last night/this morning, but I watched where and how I was using my cruise in the mountains. The brake fluid is full, no leaks anywhere. I am puzzled.
Daughter and family are doing well, power is back on, no real damage to the house. Thanks for the thoughts. She said it was quite an experience, they are in Hampton, just north of Norfolk, and the eye went practically right over them so they saw it at it's worst. They live five minutes from Langley AFB. Flooded all around them, but they were on high enough ground that they were safe. A couple of blocks over people were not so lucky.
Thanks for the input. If you have any other thoughts let me know.
