AWD Dakota Question
I just got off the phone with the dealership. They said yes you do indeed drive it in 4x4, not 4hi or 4lo for everyday on-road use. The guy I spoke with said it sounds like it's the chain tensioner. They charge about $1200 to rebuild one. Anyone done anything like this before? I'm gonna tackle it myself. I'm an automotive student at a local college and should have all the tools I would need at school.
Oh, i know how it works.. re: xfer case...its the AWD that changes things. Anyway, Id take a few hours and play with it...see what it is, and if you're stumped, take some pics and see what they guys here think...
My thinking on gears is not the metal that actually does work, the actuator mechanism...
Oh, I guess one simple test, do all your wheels drive? lol. i.e. are they all powered(verfied). Hard to do unless you have a 4wd dyno, or, 4 jack stands...

Hahah...in some capacity.
Anyway, try it yourself...the one link, guy was working on it still on the truck, so that would save soem time/effort. cases are easy...trans can get tricky. I'd give it a whirl. Worst case, take it to school

Interesting post. I also have a AWD Dakota. Mine is a 2001 SLT. I don't recall if you mentioned your truck year. Mine has basically three settings on my dash switch (AWD, 4Hi and 4Lo).
Have you thought about going to a junk yard and see if they have a dakota with the same model transfer case as yours. They're usually warranted for 6 months or something like that. Could save you a few bucks versus your out of pocket expense for buying new parts for your current transfer case plus your own time, your teachers time and the labor put in to it for the both of you.
Just a thought.

I posted this answer in another post. Maybe it could apply to you truck. Who know???...worth a shot.
Go to the Dodge/Chrysler website. Punch in your VIN number. See if there was a recall on that transfer case. I know my 2001 had one and I got mine replaced for free. And I was the second owner. Pretty sure I had it done in 2007. They still honored the recall years later.

Just did that website deal, no such luck. A1partsdepot.com actually has the nv242 transfer case for $351. It comes with a 5 year unlimited mile warranty and a 30 day no hassle fee. after 30 days you have to pay a 20% restocking fee...not too crazy about that. autozone has a refurb one for $599 with the core. I'm gonna dive in today and hope its the linkage.
