Default Belt Tensioner

I'm probally about to answer my own question; but I just want to bounce the idea off some of you to make sure before I go dropping $40 bucks at RockAuto.com;

I replaced the pully with a Dayco or w/e its called from Advanced; every time i cold start it squeaks untill it warms up; about 10 miles or so.. then stopped..

Put old back on and was normal.

I replaced again.. and it did the same thing..

Put old back on.. this time.. it wont stop squeaking; it gets lower.. once it starts warming up.. but never really goes away.

Is it safe to say that the Belt Tensioner it self is warn and needs to be replaced; I have no idea the age; for all I know and have to assume; its factory..

Found an el-cheapo for 37 or a known brand for around 40.

I would say don't buy the cheaper one unless it looks to be the exact same construction as your original one. I replaced my tensioner at 42,0000 miles. I bought my truck used and it had what I thought was a belt squeal. I went through two different tensioners from Autozone and they both kept slinging the belt off as soon as I started the engine. I looked at the tensioner from Napa on the Napa website and finally saw that their tensioner was the only one that was built and looked exactly the same as my original tensioner. It also cost about $80.00. The Autozone tensioner was built completely different from my original one and it must have somehow been throwing off the alignment of the belt. I got a refund on the Autozone tensioner and bought the Napa tensioner, it has over 100,000 miles on it now and it has been fine ever since.

sure it's not just the belt? if it was the whole tensioner it would be sticking when you compress it and put it back.

You'r probably right; I replaced this and the primary 'new' noise has stopped; the constant squil of bearings. Went ahead and replaced the Idler pully as well; 1. Was rusted other than where the belt is so this was more of a cosmetic fix; 2. the bearings sounded worn.. however there is still a Squeak Squeak Squeak seems to go away once its warmed up; not doing it at idle; just when you give a little gas.

I drove it around and about after a few miles it stopped completely. I need to change the belt out anyways; not that its "bad" as it certainly looks in good shape; no cracks or dry rot as of yet; but would like to change it out just to do it. Truck only has 138K on it; its a Nappa belt it didnt start Squeaking untill after i was trying to replace the tensioner pully to start with..

Exactly why i replaced both the tens. and idler and the hole assembly at that as I was not sure the age of the tens. go ahead and replace now and have a warranty for the 'what if'... and i still have my old one as a get me by in case the 'what if' does happen. i was looking at the cheaper one with the lifetime warranty; but something told me to go with the dayco.. not sure what.. just gut feeling..

I suppose though the cerp. belt could sound like a squeaking pulley and then stop once its warmed up enough?

I suppose.. Nappa has them for 22 bucks. might just pick one up for the hell of it since I've replaced the tens. and idler.. need to replace the belt as well so they are all new and wear together i guess.

I also need to learn how to spell..

LOL... Well seems it was the belt; however my Tens. pully was worn and the idler was right behind it.. so its a good investment..

Fixed though.. belt I had on (A Nappa) still looked bran new.. LOL!
