Default Brakes! And tailgate question.

Well I gotta say, I haven't given the rear abs enough credit. A few weeks ago I was going about 80 or 85 on the highway somewhere in Iowa you know just goin along not really paying all that much attention (nothing but corn in Iowa) and then all of the sudden I look ahead and traffic is stopped about 100 feet up the road. I slammed the brake pedal, and I could feel it pulsating, and that's the first time I've ever felt the abs engage. It may have been less than 100 feet, I don't remember. All I know is I stopped just in time.

Then again last night, I was goin about 60 on an open road when a deer jump right in front of the truck. I barely missed it, only because I hit the hooks so quickly and I think the air horn scared it pretty good. I'm more impressed with my brakes now.

And then also, do any of you have an issues with your tailgates where you have to really slam it a few times to get it to latch closed? It's been this way since I got it, I've just gotten more annoyed with it recently. The handle doesn't automatically retract, you have to push it back in. But even once you push it back, it takes a few slams for it to close.

Long post, thanks in advance.

I only had problems with that after I had a 660 atv land on the tailgate cause the ramps slid out from underneath it and it put a slight bow in it. I would check your linkages to see if any of them are bent because I know that is what is causing my problem. But I can agree with you that it is very annoying. I'm a poor married college student or I would have replaced my tailgate already. But definitively check the linkages in it.

I have to give the tailgate a good-hard-slam or it will fall
open while driving. Nothing rusted. Everything is well lubed.
I'm sure it's got to be out of adjustment somehow. Only bothers
me when I have to use it,.. Ha-ha.

I've seen tailgate latches gum up with dirt in the grease so they're sticky. If it looks like that could be the problem, spray it down with your favorite can of aerosol spray oil, then wipe up the extra. Open & close it a few times and see if it loosens up. After the thin spray oil gets things loosened and cleaned, it might be good to put a little of something heavier on it (thick oil, grease, etc) so it doesn't dry out.

nope not me. I dont have any problems with any of the above listed issues... 3-1 oil works great on the latch mechanism and the hasps... Sounds like you may have got some dried of grease campin out on your latches.

Hmmm the latches seem to be working fine. Must be something in the linking between the handle and the latches. I'll have to take the handle off sometime and check it out. I may just wind up buying a whole new (used) tailgate. Mines starting to rust out towards the bottom, after this winter it'll probably be pretty bad. I'm pretty sure I could find a cheap one on craigslist with less rust. But who knows maybe I'll fix it and just deal with the rust.
