Default Exhaust Manifold Rusted Through

(the video is only for pictures - skip to about halfway through - I didn't have a suitable camera for recording video at the time)

I had to deal with this issue with my 3.9 Dakota over the summer:

There was a rapid ticking noise coming from the passenger side of the engine - some suggested it sounded like valve train noise- maybe a lifter. But when putting it in neutral and revving the engine, the noise didn't get much louder with increased RPMs like you would think.

It was only when the truck was accelerating and the engine was under load that the noise got anly louder.

Eventually, my father somehow figured out that it was a hole in the exhaust manifold. We wound up having to replace it (and some studs broke off, naturally) and we may replace the other side next summer. (Heat shields for the 3.9s are on backorder, though)

So if anyone ever has a similar issue on their Dakota, this may be the case.

Wow , thats a pretty hefty piece of cast iron to rust through like that , must of been a defect in the casting when it was made that caused it , because from the pic/video the rest of the manifold doesnt look bad ! Just throw some JB Weld on it and you`ll be good to go , lol !!!

I'm actually thinking it was just all the road salt they use during the winter here in Michigan that's partially to blame.

We wound up replacing the manifold, got a new one from the dealership and sprayed it with some VHT high heat clear coat, hopefully that will protect it at bit.

We also had a few headaches with all the different fasteners used on the manifold, had to make at least three trips to the dealership parts counter (2 bolts, a double ended stud, and some other bolt
