This sounds like a simple upgrade. I would suggest using a simple LED and holder similar to what you would find for a car alarm indicator light.

You can find them at radio shack for cheep. Get something that would recess it in as much as possible, a white LED. Just drill the hole and mount it in.

Not if you have a manual ... there's no ash tray in manuals (or at least mine) so they didn't bother putting a light there. My last dakota was an auto and it had the ash tray and light. I don't need the ash tray but I should could use the light. I've noticed the same problem, just hasn't bugged me enough to put one there.

Does your Dakota have the center console w/o the seat(meaning the compartment console)? If so, instead of putting the led in the holder where it would stick out, and most likely get pushed in, why not put LEDs escalating up the console, maybe 3, or 4. This would supply enough light to see the holder....or maybe you could do 3 around each holder. I wouldn't recommend it being IN the holder itself.

Instantclassic//... I first thought of that, but that area is where a large cup would set. If I had a cup in there it would block the light from the rest of the holders. The smaller holders are in front so an LED in the dash would make more sense. I am going to do the LED in the dash as soon as I figure out what resistor to use.

I just got home from Radio Shack where I bought L.E.D.s and some resistors. I'll try to do a write up with pictures (if I can figure out how to post pictures) on the process. I don't expect it to be too difficult of a process. It'll be a few days before I can get to it, so stay tuned for the outcome.
