Default '03 4.7 Low Oil Pressure

2003 Dodge Dakota
SLT 4x4 Quad Cab
4.7 liter V8

Hey, Im new to the forum, but have asked a few questions and gotten good advice. I have been hearing a slight knocking noise on start up, but then it would go away as the motor warmed up. Then, yesterday I got the check gauges light and notice the oil pressure guage right on the low indication. I do have high mileage, 220,000, so it wouldnt be a suprise if the pump was bad.

Is the oil pan difficult to remove on this vehicle?
Is it common for the oil pump to go out?
Does the oil type really affect the oil pressure that much?

Its an everyday runner to and from work and around town. Im quite mechanical and have plenty of tools to do most all jobs. Any advice would be appreciated...

Thank you...
Mike

It's pretty straight forward once you remove the front diff. and pull the drive axles. Needless to say it sounds like a big job but if you have the time, patience and tools go for it. Hey post some pics too if you can.

So thats it? You think just go ahead and replace the oil pump? What about removing the oil filter, opening it up, and checking for sludge? The has been no degradation of pressure over time, it simply went from the middle of the guage to low. Is it possible that the oil pick up line is clogged?

Thanks again for any assistance

Mike
