What if I disobey tire's width ratings?

Default What if I disobey tire's width ratings?

Are there any tire guys out there?

Factory wheels are 8" wide ( I think ), and I was wanting to put some 215/70/16 on it because I can get General Grabber AT2 for $115 each. But that size is supposed to go on 6"-7.5" wheels. The 235's and up are officially supposed to go on a 8" wheel...

I know they'll fit on the rim just fine. But why does it say only up to 7.5" rim? Is it that an 8" throws the measurements off, or is it a safety problem?

I've got 265/70/16 (bigger than what you're looking at) General Grabber AT2's on my Dak (2002 2wd v6), and they're fine. No problems at all, and they're doing awesome in the snow that we had. I'd say you will be okay.

Yeah, that is a really small tire by the way. I'm 2wd and my tires come out to be like 31's. You could definitely go bigger, even on 2wd.

Like others stated, that tire would look silly because of its size. Save a little more and go bigger.

You will see very commonly P235/75/xx over P215's any day.. My truck came with P215/7?/15's.. Ive Got LT235/75/15 DuraTrac by GoodYear and they look like they are meant for the truck. Although bigger would look hella sexy.. it still is smexy.

The wider you go (with in a certain range) the tire (Footprint) will start to crown more and more the wider tire is vs. the actual rim it's on if it is not wide enough for the tire.. but the difference between 215 and 235 is nothing.

Ironically, at discount tire direct, a 245/70 is cheaper than a 235/70 ($129.77 vs. $133.77). I guess that's probably what I'll get.

Its not that I can't afford the tires, or need to be cheap. I'm just tired of spending money right now. I bought a new metal lathe a few weeks ago (just to play with, I'm an engineer not a machinist). So I've got a huge list of accessories I could spend money on...

I'm sure..

I looked at the Grabbers; other than not being able to get them as they are on national backorder at the time.. as well as looking at the AT K/O's .. I'm glad I went with the GoodYear Duratrack.. I got them for about 137 a tire and then after the 40 mail in rebate from Good year came out to be like 127 a tire.. after the price matching and all that..

Get the bigger tire.

Mine had 215/70R15 on it before and it looked silly.

I Put on 31x10.5x15 Goodyear Wrangler's and it looks much better.
