i have a 97 dakota with the 3.9l in it it has 260,000+ on it as soon it hits the 300,000 i would like to swap it with a 5.2l from a junkyard very clean motor only 50,000 miles on it.what would i need to do to make it work or what motor year would be best for a 97 dak, also the transmission has been beefed up, i would like details about an even pics would be nice ill be in a shop so i have air tools and stuff like that.

You would need a wiring harness and a computer. If you are an auto transmission, you will most likey need a new trans. And if you are a manual trans and it is an AX-15 you will need a new trans also.
As for the engines, the 5.2L didn't really change much, you are going to need to use most of your old accesories and sensors anyways, just get a good clean engine.
Suggestion would be to get a good engine hoist and a leveler bar for the install and removal.

the 5.2 will bolt right up to your 3.9 and shouldn't have any problems because they ran the same tranny with both. As for the wiring, all you really need to do is wire in two new injectors and get a new computer, if the engine has the computer with it then get that as well it will save you some money.. As for the years I'm not sure, I know I am getting a 97 5.2 to put in my truck as soon as my dad finishes his 5.9 project. Also if you search this forum there are several people that have done it and put there project on here.
