Default Pretty sure I just got raped...

OK, I posted yesterday that the front end of my 2002 Quad cab started making a popping sound at low speed. I got it to a mechanic and explained the situation and told him I wanted the diff's serviced, the transfer case serviced and transmission flushed. $650 to do the work. That's not including if a problem arises further in the front diff area. He said we can service the front end and see if that takes care of it or tear into the diff for around $1200.

The truck has 155,500 and the tranny was rebuilt at 81,000. I know things are going to start to happen but damn.

hope u didnt pay that. Have them service the diff. They can see when taking the cover off if anything is chipped or messed up. Fluid color will tell them also. The rear diff on my jeep when I took off the cover it was silver shiny metallic so I know the gears broke. Stuck my hand in there and felt bits of metal. What about a wheel bearing?

As a price guide: I spent $1200 to have a mechanic install a detroit tru-track in my Dakota. That shop is trying to gaffle you...

When does the popping noise occur. All the time? when turning? Sounds like a ball joint to me

Went ahead and had them service the diffs. Mechanic said the internals looked fine, so it doesn't look like a rebuild is needed (thank goodness).

It was making the noise when moving at a slow pace in a straight line. Not like a ball joint or CV joint. The next day I drove it to the mechanic shop and could not replicate.

Do you have the LSD in your truck? If so, it requires a special additive from Dodge. If not used, it causes a bit of a whining noise at slow speeds. (ask me how I know that )

I have something similar happening on my '04 QC, sounds like a little rock stuck in one of the back tires or something, only happens at slow speeds like slowing to a stop or right after a stop, kind of like a click, click, click sound from the rear. Only happens when going straight when you turn at slow speeds it stops.

No idea what the hell it is. Hopefully you can get it figured out, so I can check mine.

my front driveshaft made that noise when going slow or backwards. it was the rear cvjoint on the prop shaft.

How do you inspect for that? I'm at 185,000 miles and I've got a lot of shaking and rattling that I can't identify. I thought maybe UV joints on the driveshaft, but this could be it...

I've driven over 300 miles since monday and haven't had any repeat of the issue. The shop added the limited slip additive to the rear diff.
