Default Dakota Shifts without brakes

Does anyone have a clue why my automatic 99 dodge dakota shifts without me pressing the brakes, itll just slide right into reverse, drive or whatever

It's designed that way.

The shift interlock, where you need to put your foot on the brake to take it out of park came along a couple of years later.

Read it again. That's what I said.

It's designed that way.

The shift interlock, where you need to put your foot on the brake to take it out of park came along a couple of years later.
There is no interlock, they came along a few years later. So, it was designed to be that way.

ah thanks i thought something was broken and needed to be replaced and also does that mean its safe to shift it without the brakes?

Put your foot on the brake when you shift. That's what you should do, interlock or not.

Part of why they had to put the interlock in is because of accidents caused when people were just putting vehicles in gear while some also had their foot on the gas, at the same time. The vehicle would plow out of control and hit someone or a building.

The interlock is a safety feature. Do you need it, no.

I guess my question is, why wouldn't you put your foot on the brake to shift?

That was the point of what i said.. i guess i could have put LOL on the end or something.. sorry to confuse you

Nahh.. your good.. I think only someone really living dangerously would shift into gear with out pressing the break.. thats how ppl make a new garage in their living rooms and stuff..
