Humming sound? Can it be as simple as the rear diff?

Default Get a laptop

Get a laptop or cheap Netbook $200 go to the library for free web access or use their computers.

Just check what the local library has before you buy it so you match what there Wi-Fi is (N band) (M band) so on.

Surf all you like.

Not sure on the gromet but rockauto.com should have it.

Firestone is saying whole rearend needs to be replaced. Is this going to be insanely high priced? lol

Lightbulb What???

First what did they say was wrong?

Second I would do my own check of such a suggestion pop off the rear Diff cover plate and do my own inspection.

If it’s an open Diff not LSD some minor damage is OK I have read were many people on this forum say minor chips in the gears is acceptable just new oil and go.

Truly you must start doing your own work many things you can do on your Dakota for a way smaller price tag.

80% of the shops out will screw you so beware do your own work get learning my friend.

Default Oh on the Price YES

Oh on the Price YES very High Anywhere from $1K to $2K depending on what is wrong.

If it’s the ring and pinion you may as well upgrade to the gear set you want for more power to the wheels look on this forum for info on that.

Syllinx,

98Dak is right. Pop the cover and see for yourself whats going on. You can tell a lot just by looking at the condition of the ring and pinion gears. There are also wheel bearings on the rear axles that can fail and cause a "hum" and be replaced fairly easily.

I'm sorry but just saying the whole end needs to be replaced is not a valid diagnosis.

Also, don't rule out a boneyard if you truly do need a new rear end. You might be able to save a good chunk of change.

Lots of us will help you out if we can. Pop the cover and post some pictures of what you find.

Good luck.

Default Some results.

From what i can remember. The clutch pack is going out, and they showed me my right shaft on it is bent, which has been causing my vibration for the last 6 months lol. I just thought it was my coil-over shocks. I don't have the time or the help so i'm letting eagle transmission check it out. I'm learning as I go, I used to think it was impossible to do ball joints but I can see how all you have to do is drill out the bolts or pop them off somehow. Firestone ended up not charging me so whats one reason why it's at eagle transmissions. Going to see what they say.

Default Might know what it is now.

Eagle trans called and said its right front bearing. I don't really see how the bearing with play(could be ball joint) is not bad. They said its the front right bearing-hub needs to be replaced is all. Turns out with everybody i know saying different amounts of torque, i tightened right hub too tight lol.

Default Wow

Wow and Firestone wanted you to pay for a new rearend?

I knew that sounded kind of fishy.

Default Yep.

Firestone will easily charge 100 just to change plugs. Going to the other firestone on other side of town cause they are a little better. I have lifetime balance and alignment so I have to get tires balanced soon and i'm not going to the one that wanted 3900 after all for axle.
