To those with 3.9s how long has your trans lasted?

And your motor?

Ive heard its guranteed after 150k your trans will blow . I just wanna see how long others have lasted without rebuild

I've got about 135,000 on my 3.9 with auto tranny, and it shifts smooth as ever. I believe that with normal maintenance it could go to 200,000 without a rebuild.

149,600 on my original 3.9, clutch and transmission and all 3 are still running fine. Mine is a manual NV3500 and it still shifts super smooth and easy. I just change out the fluid with Pennzoil Synchromesh every 35,000 to 40,000 miles. I change my oil every 3,000 miles and do a tune-up with new plugs, cap and rotor about every 30,000 miles, I use Napa Belden Premium plug wires and change those out every other tune-up.

My engine still runs pretty good for its age, and has had nothing done to it other than normal maintenance items like tune-up, new serpentine belts every 2 years, and I replaced my MAP and both upstream O2's at 85,000 miles, they were still OK, I just did those as proactive maintenance, and to help my gas mileage. I did replace the water pump at about 142,000, and I had to replace my AC compressor and receiver-drier. The AC was still working OK, but it had an odd noise I did not like so I changed it all out. The water pump was still working OK too, it just had a little more play in the pulley shaft than I felt comfortable with so I replaced it and all of the hoses, clamps, etc, plus went back with brand new plain green antifreeze. The only other engine part I have had to replace was the fan clutch. Other than that it has just been normal wear and tear replacement parts like brake pads, shocks, ball joints, tires, wiper blades, batteries, etc. I still have plenty of meat left on my original rear brake shoes, even at 149,000 miles. My Dakota has been the very best truck I have ever owned.

Edit: Oh yeah, I had to replace my power steering pump and both ps hoses a couple months ago too. I figure 149,000 miles is a pretty good life span for a ps pump.

I have the auto with my 3.9 and it is still running strong with 201k on it. I bought it with 123k on it and as far as I know the tranny is original, the only major problem I've had with it was the transfer case blew up while I was going down the freeway just over a year ago. Other than that just the basic maintenance, replaced the water pump and radiator hoses just cause they were starting to get soft. The power steering and hoses, cleaned the throttle body, put a after market intake on it and changed the muffler and took out the cat. I'm just starting to get a tick in the front end so I think I'm going to be needing to change my timing chain soon, unless I can get it to last till I do my swap this summer/fall.

I guess I must be the unlucky one because I have less than 100k on my engine but my tranny was replaced a few years ago.

I dunno if this will be helpful but for what it's worth:
I bought my V6 3.9 1998 Dakota at 130K. The Trans needed to be rebuilt. The engine...I dunno. I've been lucky so far with the engine...
