Default cranks fine in morning but long crank all day

98 dak 5.2 starts up with a quick turn of the key first thing in the morning the rest of the day takes a good 4 - 5 seconds each time. Battery is new and since it starts fine first thing in the morning, im thinking its something else.

Anyone ever experienced this? Thanks

Is the truck "Hot" when your trying to start it during the day? As in to near or at operating temps.. like your shutting off and on?

Jonda, not necessarily. I can leave it sit for a few hours and it still does it. Seems like the only time it starts fast is first thing in the morning. Weird.

Your dad's a smart guy. The battery is new within the past 6 months. I've fixed more things on the cheap. I hate going right for the most expensive first.

Could be a leaky injector or injectors? If it sits all night then the fuel has time to evaporate. But only sitting a few hours may not give it enough time.

Or could be a coil. Although if that were it I would expect it to not run right while it's hot.

Or maybe fuel tank pressure/vacuum? Try opening the cap prior to the hot start during the day. It's most likely not the issue but it's a super easy check.

Here's a new symptom.

Yesterday it was about 80 degrees here. I live close to my work, and run home a few times during the day, its about three blocks away.

3 x's, it almost didnt start. Sounded like it was dead, no noise or a crack that sounded like a weak battery, then after a few times it would just start like no problem.

This happened 3x. Later that day, it was sitting for a while and started no problem. Each time I had a problem, the engine was warm but not even at normal operating temp.

Battery? Im baffled..lol.

thanks guys.

I would get it tested.. first thing.. esp if your getting starting issues and/or its acting like a dead battery when you crank it.. that should be your clue you have battery and/or connection issues.. if the battery is good.

Ok, battery works.

Turns out it was the starter. Found one on ebay for $81. Took an hour to put in.....should have been 30 mins but the corrosion on the terminal nuts was ridiculous! Lol

Thought id post the outcome incase someone else has the same problem.
