I've started repairing a long gouge in my front bumper. I removed the loose material, roughed up the surface some, filled with bumper filler, and have been sanding down. What isn't clear to my is what I do next.

Is there anything (adhesion promoter, etc) I need to put on before I prime or is just sanding ok? Is there a particular type of primer I should use? And lastly, is there something special about the paint?

I'm just looking for touching up the area and not necessarily repainting the whole bumper.

Any help would be great!

Nope, just slap some primer on after sanding and you're good to go.

 

All you need is your primer, paint and clear coat. Dont worry too much about types of primer, it will stick to anything with a rough service (after sanding).

To do a good job:

-After you apply your filler, sand it down nice and smooth.
-Spray on 2 light coats of primer - wait 15 mins
-Spray on 1 more medium-light - let it dry overnight
-Sand it down again (with finer grit 1500-2000)
-Spray paint on 1-2 (depending on if its covered) of light coats - wait 15 mins
-Spray paint on final covering coat (med-light) - let it dry over night.

-You'll wake up and it'll look hazy (no worries first time painting).
-Add 1-2 final light coats and wait 6 hours
-Apply clearcoat - let dry 4-6 hours
OR
-If you manage to nail it and it looks fine and glossy slap on your clearcoat and let it dry 4-6 hours.

It really isn't a hard job to do, just takes practice!
