New muffler advice?
So I am looking to install a new muffler soon. Its been about two years with the current sound, I am just looking for a change. I like for it to be loud but not popin like a straight piped z71 loud. I like a nice deep roar, but a mean sounding upper range.
I have been using a generic (don't know the name) flowmaster. Im looking to get the real thing now. The upper range on mine sounds weak and I am not a big fan of it.
I'm stuck between the original 40 series or the 40 series delta flow.
I watch
video of a 5.2 dakota, no cat with the delta flow and I love the way it sounding when it got in the upper range. A lot meaner than my current muffler.
Anyways I removed the cat, and I am planning on keeping my turn downs. I read somewhere that the delta flow was quieter than the original 40 series. From the video it didn't seem any quieter than my generic flowmaster.
Which would you guys recommend?
Oh an also what is the inlet size on a dodge dakota? Or does it even matter? At the muffler shop do they have couplings to bring it from one size to another? Been quite some time I have thought about this stuff so my memory on everything isn't as sharp.
For example if I buy a muffler with 3" inlet 2 2.5" outlets, And the inlet from the truck is a 2.5". He could just have a 2.5" to 3" coupling and weld that to the muffler and the pipe correct?
If it matters the video below is my truck.
I sounds good untill you hit 2.5k rpms. Then starts gradually sounding like straight pipes, not a fan of. Also you hear that popping when I let off the gas? Very annoying and I am hoping flowmaster nearly eliminates that. It sounds good if you drive it like a normal person would though.

I personally liked the deep tone of my magnaflow. I had 2.5in and dual 2.5 out with 3.5in tips. Just get a 2.5in muffler that way you dont need a coupler its just easier.
Here is my dak with its first setup(magnaflows and stock cat)
Then I moved on to ditching my exhuast and running just my cat with just a piece of pipe that made it to the end of the cab(sounded awesome imo)
Neither setup was too loud where it was obnoxious

I have always loved the tone of a magnaflow. The only reason I stray from them is I they are too quite for me. They sound great, I just like a little more noise.
The only reason for asking about the coupler is the original 40 series had a 3in inlet. I might be able to find one with a 2.5" inlet, but that was the first link that I found so I ran with it.

It amazes me how many guys buy into Flowmaster. Have you ever looked at the flow rates of those chambered mufflers? In most cases they restrict exhaust flow worse than stock mufflers. The chambering does sound decent, but I'm sorry, I just won't degrade performance. There are mufflers out there that sound as good or better and still flow up around 500 cfm or higher...
I have to agree with you Hammer; When i took off my stock muffler and put on my 40 Series; I did notice a little decrease in initial response off my truck. I thought i was crazy but it seems looking back to be the case.. My truck is not Obnoxiously loud; but its not quite either.. Everyone always turns and looks even if im creeping through a parking lot..
Father in-law says it sounds good one of the best he's heard.. and he's really not a fan of loud exhausts.. so coming from him was a major compliment.

I am aware of the restrictive flow rate of flowmaster. It is something I learned way back before I put the one I have on my truck. I am not concerned about performance on this truck. Sound is what I am going for.
Well when I first got this muffler on my truck I had pipes running out the back. Even with no cat it still wasn't loud enough for me. Which is why I got it dumped behind the rear axle. Even now I wish it was a little bit louder.
When I was deciding what muffler to go with a few years ago, I listened to every sound I could find. I looked to see what performed better, and what they sounded like. Ultimately I decided flowmaster. The reason being was it the best sounding and it was pretty loud. Granted both of these are relative to the individual, but this is my personal preference.
If there comes a day when I want something quieter, magnaflow will be my first choice. I chose flowmaster over magnaflow, just because they were louder.

I think I have decided to go with the 40 series delta flowmaster from summit. Same price as the link above but free shipping.
I am going to dump them behind the axle just like my current setup is. I hope it sounds as mean as the guys in the first video that I posted. Don't know why it wouldn't though. He had a 5.2l and no cat so maybe it will sound as mean as his.
