Default 97 Dodge Dakota 4x4 accuation

Recently, my girlfriends parents purchased a 97 dodge dakota sport 4x4, having a few issues with 4wd. I know on the 1500 front monobeam, there is a vacuum actuator in the front axle that engages 4x4. Just curious how 4x4 was accuated on the IFS suspension. Thanks.

What are the issues she's having?

There are no actuators on the front axle. If you're moving then everything turns all the time on a Dakota, there are no hubs that you can unlock. The only place that can disconnect is at the transfer case itself.

It's a simple system. The linkage is all mechanical at the transfer case as to gear selection.
