I'm curious about this procedure too - I just picked up a brand new to me 2004 2wd dakota & the power steering squawks & when I turn & brake I get a strange clacking sound. Otherwise its tight - doesn't pull or shimmy etc.

I'm thinking its the rack.

 

did ya check out the steering shaft knuckle??
