Default oily pump

My water pump gave up the ghost today. The issue is when it happened It shot oil all over my garage floor. This is not normal and I don't have a clue. Any ideas?

which engine you have is important. i think some might have the oil pump around the front of the engine.

What do mean by "gave up the ghost?"

The back of the water pump is the timing chain cover. If the shaft was able to move around enough it could have punctured/worn a hole into that cover. Antifreeze could then get into the crankcase.

i think DAN hit the nail on the head. there is a specl timing chain holder that holds the chain from bouncing around. all so look at permatex form-a gasket sealant item # 80016 (2b). i like it better than RTV.
