4.7 seafoam knock
so i read alot about it and decided to buy some seafoam to try it out, followed directions goven here in the forum 1/3 gas, 1/3 crankcase 1/3 vacuum lijne on the brake booster. got the tiniest puff of smoke after i started it up after waiting 10-15 minutes and truthfully never noticed a difference except the very faint knok that has been there if you got up in the wheel wells while the truck was on has now turned into a very noticeable knock that can be heard while just being around the truck. i know the 4.7 has always had either a lifter knock or an manifold knock (when cold) but this was even after a good 25-30 minute drive at full temp, so im gonna rule out the manifold (let me know if this could still be it) but my big question is could the seafoam be blamed for the louder knock?
seafoam is great for cleaning out the carbon deposits in the tb. im unsure about the knock, but i had stayed away from dumping it in the oil because of messing up the viscosity and making oil thinner. id do a oil change if i were you.
For some reason, people seem to think there's magic in a can, and Seafoam gets a lot of attention on car forums. I looked up the MSDS, and I don't want it in my crankcase, I'll guarantee you; not much of a lubricant. As for cleaning out carbon, good 'ol H2O works great if you know how to use it. It can be dangerous if you don't, because you can hydrolock an engine and damage a piston or rod. I used to clean out carbon by gradually pouring water in the carb until the motor stumbled, shutting it off at that point, then letting it sit for awhile before restarting. But it does take a little technique. Best to just give the beast a hard highway run locked out of OD to get the rpm's up.
I used Seafoam last fall when my truck was running like junk. It was cutting out and bogging down, ran Seafoam through the crank, intake, and gas line, and within 50 miles it was running like new. I'm guess it was a clogged injector or something, but the Seafoam cured it.
