2000 42re tranny question
As I recall, a 42 is a 42 is a 42 is a POS 42. Doesn't matter what year.
As long as you have a built by a trustworthy shop, it should last a while. What brand parts they use really decide things. When my trans dumped on me, we took it to a "reputable" shop that had good words on the yellowpages. Cheap parts. 2 months, convertor weld failed. 1.5 years, trans went out again. Took it to one of the guys that races, he tore it down, convertor lockup band had deteriorated and filled trans with band material, found 5 things the previous shop did wrong. They even removed and bypassed a number of checkvalves to make the trans go out quicker for re-servicing.
Now I take everything to that guy. Just had him do my shocks and LCA bushings.
Find a place with a good reputations is all I got to say. He said the trans should outlast the truck now as long as I keep the temps down once I start running the street class at the track.
