Obviously, not all of this will apply to the job you're doing, but it still gives you a good idea what you'll need to do.

Here's one place to get the tool.

Unfortunately, there's really not another right way to check the backlash. It's easy to do with the dial indicator, though. That link I posted should show you how. Basically, you want to put the plunger on the edge of the ring gear (on a tangent), then hold the pinion while you rotate the ring gear to check the play between the gears (backlash), which should be around .008".

man i really appreciate the help. on my carrier when i go to take it out. if i just loosen one of the adjusters and leave the other right where it was, cant i just tighten the one i moved back up and shouldnt that put the carrier back into place? and what kinda of tool is it im looking for for the adjust *****/screws?

To be honest, I've never tried it that way. You might be able to leave the right nut in place and just remove the left. I don't know if you'll be able to get the carrier out or not.

hey i geuss its worth a try. i read that someone on another forum had done that. not sure if it was a success or not. is there a chart of some kind with all torque specs? mainly the pinion nut, and adjusters?

to check the back lash, you need to use a travel indicator, NOT a test indicator. allso you can use a cigarette paper, and newspaper paper. if you get it set so that cigarette paper can be rolled between the teeth with out getting cut, but the newspaper paper is cut off. will be good.
