Default What trannys will fit?

The tranny has just gone out on my 1999 Dakota 5.9 Magnum V8 (automatic) and I was wondering what ones would be suitable replacements?

I can do modifications and make things fit as long as it is possible.

I really need my truck running again as at the moment it won't even move, it just grinds and whines in drive.

IIRC,

V6- 42RE
5.2 V8- 44RE
5.9 V8- 46RE

all use identical bolt patterns, only internals are different.

I would just replace it with a 44RE - the same one you had.

Saves trouble... You could use the 42RE but thats for the 3.9L which is just 2 cylinder short of the 5.2. The only problem is that you wouldn't get as much life out of it because it's more of a light/medium duty tranny opposed to your heavier duty 5.2/44re combo.

The 5.9 I have no idea.

A'righty I'll head off and see if I can find one of the same type.

Got me a fresh box of Camels, my tool box, my Sunday cruiser ('77 Ford sedan) with a trailer attacked so I'm ready to pull a tranny off if I find one at the scrappers.

Will report back.

I figure as long as the tranny isn't 7 foot tall then she ought to be able to fit in the front seat.

I found a 1998 Dakota with a rusted out body which had obviously had a lot of parts picked from it but still had the tranny!

I couldn't test it though because the motor was gone, but it was a 5.9 Magnum I'm told.

The odometer read 112,000 miles and the salvage yard owner said it was driven there so I gave $100 and a case of beer ( I know the owner) and got to work removing that pig.

A pack of Camels and a few cuts and bruises later it was in my trailer on the way back to my ranch.

I'll fit it tomorrow, after buying another pack of course. It is a 20 cigarette job removing a tranny you know!

Been super busy lately so I only got a chance to change the tranny yesterday but it is all done now.

Put new fluid in it and the Dakota has hit the road once again.

Took 'er for a nice long drive today to check it out and it runs great.

Sweet - cheers guys.
