I have a 3.9L V6. It is a manual. It seems like I spend the entire time shifting because I am in 5th gear by 35Mph. Is there a way to change that?

Something is not correct here if you have a weak or diminished engine that has no power you should never even see 5th gear because you will have no power at all... gears 1 through 4 would be your best gears being the lower gears.

5th gear would have O power stay away from using the 5th gear get an engine compression test done or try the mmo.

You may have a number of things going on like a plugged cat or muffler.
Do the compression test.

Pull any codes do you have any dash warning lights on?

Go to autozone and have them pull any codes for you.

What rpm do you shift at? 5th is more for cruising down the highway. Is it a 4wd? If so does it have a gear splitter?

I wish it was 4wd. I am shifting at about 2k rpm, just before my shift light comes on. I know there is a compression leak, which is probably the reason for the lack of power. I am wondering if my transmission might need work too.

I dont use my shift light just shift at what feels correct.

No codes no warning lights?

You are not giving us much to go on here elaborate what have you done/not done.

Be specific on things

Have you checked the trans fluid level? engine oil?

You give us nothing to work with.

What trans do you have? what rear end?gear ratio?

List everything about the Dakota please

That explains why you're in 5th at 35. I can be in 5th too if i shifted around 2k. i think you have the nv 3500 trans with a 3.55 rear end. Dont quote me on that though. Can you provide us with some details on the truck?
