Default speedometer not working

Hello everyone,

I have a 2002 Dakota 4.7 4x2 quad cab about a week ago the speedometer would go up and down and doesn't match with the speed. Check engine light is on and it's saying a speed sensor malfunction. Is it an easy fix or do I have take it to a mechanic? Thanks.

It should be an easy fix. It's on top of the differential. You can try cleaning it, it may have a layer of fine metal on it, from the differential, or replace it.

P0500 is the code for the (differential) speed sensor.

Key on (don't start), off, on, off, leave on. Codes appear in the odometer window.

I looked under the truck and I found two sensors by the transmission. I can't seem to find the sensor on top of the differential. I check it out tomorrow morning.

What code did you get? The P####'s. There is more than one speed sensor.
