Get a 2000. Its the last year of the frame, engine, "good" parts that can be changed or modified without much trouble, but is also late enough in the model that the bugs are worked out.

Also, the 2000 and later models, you may qualify for the ball joint recall.

i own a 1998 R/T and i love it!!! the milage on mine is pretty bad, but thats mostly due to the fact that i am runnin 4:10 gears. a stock setup should get you about 20 on the highway and depending on how heavy your right foot is, about 10-17 on the streets. if and when u get one, make sure you do your homework and find a good one. I looked at about 6 of these things (within 150 miles of my home) before i finally found mine, whcih had 51,000 miles when i bought in in the spring of 2005 and had never been drivin in the rain or the snow. there are a lot of these things out there that are beat, so make sure you have a mechanic check it over. good luck in your search, and please feel free to ask me any other R/T related questions

When I had my '99 R/T, I was getting about 10-12 around town and 14-17 highway.
had Mopar Headers, 3" catback w/Flowmaster 40 series, 14X3 K&N airfilter.

Get a 2000 or later model, there are some changes between the 98-99's and 2000's. mainly the steering assembly. 2000 models, they changed out the recirculating balljoint with a rack and pinion so you get quicker steering responses. I think the turning radius is also reduced so you can have tighter turning. 2001 and later models, some changes to the dash as well.

all 2wd dakotas have rack and pinion steering... not just 2000 and newer. what you said only applies to the four wheel drive dakotas.
