Lightbulb Top ball joint rivets removal made easy

Here is some info that may come in handy

I just drilled out my top Ball joint rivets with only my 14.4 volt battery Dewalt and it worked out fine didn’t need the powerful corded drill like last time.

I also tried only one drill size ¼ not three sizes up till it was drilled out and this worked way better than the old three drill sizes slowly drilling the rivet out way.

I think this worked better all-around it was easy, only hard part was the hammering out the rivet one was easy the other was not so easy.

I also did this without taking anything off except my tire then drilled them out one at a time and put a bolt in as a replacement as I’m not removing the Ball joint just yet just getting ready to do them but now all I need to do is un-bolt them in a day or two when I’m ready to replace my ball joints and bushings on my passenger side.

Oh I used some grade 8 nuts and bolts as a temp replacement for the rivets

Always trying something different

I work for midas, I do dakotas and the full size rams with rivets all the time. I used a snapon air hammer with a chizel bit to knock off both caps, then a pointed bit to hammer down the shaft of the rivet... takes about 2 minutes per rivet...just have to be careful not to bugger up the control arms too bad... If you get a stubborn one just apply some heat...

we have a 120psi 40 gallon compressor, but an air chisel is out of our reach. But that's what a die-grinder with carbide blade is for. We still have air tools from 15+ years ago. Our impact is 25 years old, socket retainer broke off, but it still works. Just have to make sure the socket doesn't go flying.

Same way I do them. If you pay attention to the angle of the chisel, it doesn't mess up the control arm at all.
