Default Trouble with reverse and high idle

Ok, so I drive a '97 2wd Dakota with a 5-speed manual v6. I am having some trouble getting it into reverse sometimes. I don't know too much about automobiles so it may be a dumb question, but I just want to know what I should do or if it is normal. It only happens about a quarter of the times I try to shift into reverse, but when it does it makes a grinding/clanking noise and is harder to get into gear. I have tried just releasing the clutch and it doesn't help. Another thing that I was wondering about is sometimes when I drive if I go to a stop and put in the clutch the idles are higher than normal, somewhere between 1700 and 2100 rpm, and I would just like to know if that is normal too or if its something i need to get fixed. Any help is appreciated...

I don't know what trans I have. How would I go about finding that out? I don't have the owners manual, when I bought it the manual wasn't with it, I am the third owner.

There is a paper in the glove box that will tell you what one you have. If not you can go here and get a build sheet emailed or mailed to you. http://www.dodge.com/wccsapp/univers...ull&category=R

I know in my ram my reverse is hard to get in at times but if I go to 1st or 3rd then go to reverse it goes right in.

When's the last time you cleaned your throttle body? It can cause the erratic idle. Pull it off the truck and clean it thoroughly, especially the Idle Air Control ports. They can get very dirty.

come to think of it my old 92 used to do that as well it would idle high if I was coasting with the clutch pushed in and in gear when I came to a full stop it woul idle down abs sensor might have something to do with it. I remember someone thinking that if the sensor is bad it can affect idle.

Ok thanks guys. I'll check the throttle body, I just bought it a few weeks ago so I don't know last time it was cleaned. and I'll check for the paper. Thanks again.
