Default Whats up with my shift lever

I bought my 2003 new,4 door, 4x4 4.7 automatic..
last year I left my Daughter use my truck,, maybe this is what messed it up maybe not..
When I start my truck, and pull the shift lever to reverse, and back up. then try to go to drive, the shifter just flop, sometimes it goes into what looks like 2nd, but nothing else..has anyone have this problem.. sometimes If i push the shifter hard back to park, it might work.. most not.. I cant tell when it will do it.It might be ok for months. then it miight go for a week and everyday It will do it again.I havent went to the Dealer yet to see what they would say.. I can take my key out when it does go into second gear,, This is not a transmision problem.. Its a problem in the shifter area,

If the shift linkage is like the throttle cable it passes through a plastic adjuster. Adjuster may be slipping through the bracket but may have enough of the tabs to catch sometimes? You could start looking at the cable for signs if damage. If I'm wrong at least you aren't out any money. Just the couple seconds it takes to look

i bought this truck new, And I never received any recall notices,,
I did take the cover off the steering column.I did find a black flat piece of plastic, about the size of a popcicle stick with a hole in it. that rides through a round plastic thing and I take it, thats what moves the cable to the transmission, My wifes on me to take it to the dealer to have it fixed,,,and Im sure they wont find anything wrong and when I leave it will let me sit some where,,thats my luck

It's just a sticky gear indicator, not a transmission or shifter problem. If you already have the cover off, just look in there to see what moves, clean it, and maybe lube it a little.

Oh. I was under the impression your shift lever was flopping around? Shouldn't the 04s have a digital readout of the gear selection?

Yes when I cant get this to go into gear, and thats what I dont get, its not all the time,It will be fine for weeks. Months, and you go to put it in park,,, Bammm , the shifter just flops..no pressure,,The shifter isn't moving the cable,Im pulling the truck back in the Garage today, and get the steering column cover apart and look deeper,

OK I took it all apart again.. I did force some lube down the cable..So I will see if it happens again somewhere down the road..I dont see any rips or tares in the cable.
