Starting the engine for a few seconds to get the last 4 drops of old oil out is probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The little bit of old oil that is left will not even be noticeable once you put 6 new quarts in.

I don't know why this is even a conversation. I won't be running my truck without oil anytime soon, whether it is for 1 second or 5 minutes.

1. Start engine, let oil warm (and coat all necessary parts), turn off engine
2. Remove drain plug and wait a few minutes
3. Briefly start engine then observe more oil coming out the drain hole
4. Remove and replace oil filter
5. Replace drain plug
6. Add new oil
7. Start engine and confirm oil pressure without leeks.

I look forward to hearing what many of you have to say about this.

a) Stupidest thing I ever heard. (Well, maybe not the stupidest, but easily in the top 10)

x2 on that!!!! I run pro-long in all the engines I own (trucks, suv, boat, dirt bikes, even my lawn mower) just to PREVENT DRY START-UPS after sitting in the first place....Which is the MAIN reason a engine even wears out (dry start ups, metal to metal contact) If you change your oil every 3,000 miles like your suppose to. this is a non issue anyway. I think I will just keep getting a little oil on my hands...just my

I was not trying to be Mr. stupid; as much as it looks like I am. Sometimes I need to ask the stupid question to get the obvious answer. I have a habit of over-thinking things, and this one just never let go.

Now that I think more about it, I'm guessing I'll be referred to as the idiot for quite a while. Learn something new every day...

I really like the pig blanket. I work around paint systems and it's a very common item that does a fantastic job!

~Won't be asking any more stupid questions~

Lol i wouldn't let these guys get you down. Everyone has to learn somewhere, people aren't born with infinite knowledge. To us its a stupid question. To someone that doesn't know its a GREAT question. Could keep you from ruining your ride. If it makes you feel better i met a guy once at work who had gotten a flat tire over night. He asked me detailed instructions on how to change his tire, I laughed but realized he was serious. Not everyone knows.

A lot of people are like that. I still think in high school when you do drivers ed that should be one of the things they teach you. I know people that take their cars to the shop cause they have no clue how to do anything. My uncles neighbor took his car to the shop cause he didnt know where to put the washer fluid....its like really?

Exclamation

Maybe you are asking the question in the wrong way just what are you after?

Please explain what you are looking for?

Your questions sound like a lead up to a sales pitch

Default No Sales Pitch

I'm not trying to sell anything. I'm an average guy with less than an average understanding of automobile engine/drive-train operation. Heck, I just learned (from my son) how to change front disk brakes last year. Yeah, I"m 47 and just learned one of the most simple tasks many of YOU have been doing since you were a teenager.

I now want to learn more so I can do more and know more about what I'm doing, oh, and why I'm doing it.

Listen up. If everyone complains about the < 1/2 pint of oil that falls from the oil filter upon removal, the question is: why not bump the engine over for a couple seconds and have the oil pump push it out?

Is that much different than your vehicle sitting for a week and starting it dry? I've even stated to run it warm (which will freshly coat everything) before performing this action.

And Thank you cummingetit for understanding my direction.

The only stupid question is the one not asked, right?

Catch you all in the learning curve!
