Well if the oil pump has nothing to suck its not going to do anything. Wont push the oil out of the filter.

When I run out of pig mats(which is quite often) This is what I do to catch the oil out of my filter. I dont have to worry about draining the oil pan and makin a mess because I can fit a 5 gal bucket under my truck, Yes thats right a 5 gal bucket lol

My filter holds about a quart so its just easier to do it this way lol

I use a large sheet of cardboard on the floor, and an oil catch pan with the wide mouth opening (Blitz maybe?) to catch the oil, on top of a box if needed to position it higher. On the filter, position the catch pan under the filter, then loosen the filter with a filter wrench, and turn the filter by hand until oil starts freely flowing down the side into the pan. Then wait a couple minutes for it to stop draining, and unscrew it the rest of the way.

Keep a paper towel or shop rag handy, and wear latex gloves if you're really concerned about your hands.

I've had vehicles with filters positioned such that they never drained much out, and I've had vehicles with filter elements mounted inside the drain pan, such that once you loosened the massive filter access plug, you pretty much had to go take a shower and then come back later to complete the oil change (Olds Calais 4 cyl). They're all a little different.

Personally i don't like to start my engine before an oil change because it pumps oil to the top of the motor then i have to wait for it to drain back, idk how long it actually takes to drain back or the amount that actually goes up there i just know i can be very Impatient and don't like to wait till every last drop falls out. If its just dribbles in the top end I'd change my mind about it but if its like 1/2 of a quart or more (which is my impression) i don't want it up there when i put fresh in. Someone said earlier that the pump won't push the remainder of the oil out of the filter when the pans empty. Have you ever saw a filter on a fish tank when the water level drops below it? It holds a certain amount of water in it because it doesn't have any water on the inlet to push the rest out. Hope that helps give you a better idea.

In response to the original question, I would never knowingly start my vechile without any oil but if I did, I'd want to have been running synthetic oil (better protection) instead of the regular dino oil.

I like your Technique for holding that pan up there...You cant be taught cool stuff like that in college...just in the school of hard knocks 101. The common sense factor, someone ether has it or they never will... haha
