Default Rear end Clunking

Hey guys, got a 2001 4.7ltr Quad Cab 4X4.

The problem is when I am corning I am getting a clunk from the rear end thought at first is was a loose tire.

It is a floating rear end. when I raised the rear end I could pull the tire in and out 3/8 of a inch.

Is this a sign of broken C-clips if so what is holding the axle in?

I have no other signs of issues just when turning.

Its normal to have play because of the c clip, if it weren't attatched it would simply just slide out. Do you have a locker in the rear that could be going bad? If not I'd say that there is a spider gear with a busted tooth in there.

Some play is normal but if it's really 3/8", that's way excessive. The best thing to do would be to take the cover off and have a look inside.

I am wondering if I have a broken tooth on a spider gear. Sometimes when I stand on it from a dead stop, I can feel something in the rear "slip" and then grab - kinda like the wheel loses traction at first but I kinda think it is coming from the rearend. also sometimes when coming to a stop I kinda get the same feeling of something "piling up" does that make sense when I say piling up?
At about 40mph I get a vibration from the rear that smooths out at about 50mph. Strange thing is, I jacked the rear up and took a video of the Ujoints and driveshaft to check for anything unusual. I started the truck up and took the mph up to 40mph, hovered there for a while and climed and then back down. I didn't catch anything on the video but later when I took the truck out, the vibration was gone. It came back though the next day.
I just hate the thoughts of taking the cover off and having to reseal the cover and adding new oil. Yah - that does sound lazy doesn't it - considering the peace of mind I will get from knowing.

Weird I just get the single cluck when I turn to the left. After that is goes away

Wondering if it is the clutch plates with broken clips anyways the mechanic will take it apart tomorrow we will see.

No clue what you mean by piling up, any chance your Trans could be slipping in 1st? I would think if you have enough busted teeth to feel a Noticeable slip and grab you would also notice a very audible bang? I have driven with busted teeth before and it gave a loud bang and a very noticeable jerk that you could feel through everything.

My understanding of the transmission slipping ( I have had that happen) is that when you hit the gas it just revs like you are in neutral. This is like one of the drive whheels starts to slip on the pave then grabs. Piling up... Maybe like if something is supposed to be stationary but when you are stopping it slides ahead, out of position?

You think its possible you have a loose u bolt or shackle? Your rear end walking forward and back is all i can imagine by your definition of piling up?

If it is a Chrysler 9.25 with limited slip they are known to grenade the c-clips, mine had to be rebuilt at just over 100K, went to change the fluid and there were lots of metal chunks stuck to the magnet. Mine never clunked but the LSD def didn't work right. The sticker in the glove box tells you what rear you have.
