Default Transmission shift cable length

98 Dakota 2wd - 3.9l

I have replaced my 44re tranny with a 46re(i think). The tranny came from a 318 vehicle.

The new shift cable mount is different than the old one. It's about 3 1/4" further away than the 44re. Are the cables different for v6 vs a v8 engine?

I can either weld a special adapter to make it fit or purchase a different cable if that will be simpler.

Thanks
Dwight

as far as i know that there were different cables for the different motor/tranny combos.. you can try a bone yard, or your preferred dealer. as for welding, i wouldnt suggest it, i belive that those tranny housings are made of cast ALUM. I DO NOT suggest welding directly to the housing. I truly feel that you can get a new cable from the bone yard or dealer. i gotta replace a couple cables myself, while im on the phone with dodge, i will try to get you a PN

I wouldn't weld on the bell housing, I would weld on the cable bracket.

If you are able to find out the PN, that would be great.

Using http://www.factorychryslerparts.com, I'm not so sure that the cables are different. The tanny came from a dodge 2500 van, so the cable bracket could diffidently be wrong.

Right now I'm using wire to keep it in place. Not the best solution.

I have a good junk yard by me, if all the trany's haven't been removed.

thanks

for that year and motor/tranny config, dodge couldnt give me a damn number, i would say try grabbing the cable from the van it came out of, or a similar vehicle..

as for the welding, that could work. my apologies, but i spoke not from self experience but witnessing friends and family do it and fail miserably (told them so).. i was just trying to pass a word of caution. i know cast iron can be arc welded with nickel rod, but i am unsure of cast alum. but steel/steel on the braket could very well work.

Cast iron welding isn't fun or worth it.

I just found a Durango that has the tranny still in it at the junk yard Sometime this week I will go and lift it up and see what parts I can take from it. Hopefully by Friday it still has all the parts.

Suppose to rain/snow tomorrow hopefully it won't be too sloppy by Friday.
