A coil will work very hard to make a gap spark as you widen the gap the coil will work as hard as possable to produce the energy to make it happen.

Well, I'm not an electrical engineer, so anything I say is subject to correction by somebody who knows more than I do. But I've always been under the impression that the primary coil windings (the only ones that carry any real current) have no direct connection to the secondary windings (the ones that generate the high voltage to produce the spark) so they have no way of "knowing", and therefore compensating, for any difference in voltage required to jump the spark plug gap. So the only difference, if I'm correct, would be a shorter spark duration, since the total secondary energy (measured in millijoules) produced by the coil remains constant.

Anybody have a better explanation?

IGNITION COIL FAILURES

Ignition coils are very rugged and reliable, but can fail for a variety of reasons. Heat and vibration can damage the coil's windings and insulation causing shorts or opens in the primary or secondary windings.

But the number one killer of ignition coils is voltage overload caused by bad spark plugs or plug wires.

This means a wide plug gap

If a spark plug or plug wire is open or has excessive resistance = the gap, the ignition coil's output voltage can rise to the point where it burns through the coil's internal insulation causing a short. The insulation in many coils can be damaged if output exceeds 35,000 volts. Once this happens, the coil's output voltage may drop causing ignition misfire when the engine is under load, or the coil may cease to put out any voltage preventing the engine from starting or running.

it may explode is another failure

I only learned this last year reserching sparkplugs and Hot coils for my 2.5 engine the Accel and the MSD coils are the same product just one is red the other is yellow im sure they are made by the same company then branded to each.

The Bosch Iridium Fine Wire Spark Plugs only run about $6 each I think I got them for less than that.

Sparkplugs can be such beautiful looking fine machined things

The picture below is typical of the 6 out of 8 plugs I could remove the coil from... I guess the PCM or coil can adjust for the gap tolerance. I'll be having my shop take care of 7 & 8 (I just could not get the coils off!).

Guess I have to delete other pictures I've uploaded already. I've seemed to have reached a limit....

Looks like you have to go to my photos and check it out... can't even see the electrode in the old ones!

Hope this works!

If you have or can make a photobucket account you can upload pics there and then copy the image code from photobucket and post it and it will load the pic in the thread here. Really simple once you get it set up for posting pics here or anywhere.

Those plugs look really really bad! Amazing how the ECU can make up for that.

Makes me feel better about gapping mine out for the methanol injection and MSD HVC system. Haven't decided how far yet, but I'm leaning towards .045 - .050.
