Default Grinding/Popping/Click noise when in 4WD

This is my first truck. I just got it about 2 months ago. It was sitting for probably 3 years. I put it in 4wd due to snow conditions today. It engaged just fine. and seems to work. Except when i start picking up speed, some noises start around 15 mph. Its either coming from the middle or right under my feet. Its hard to hear the noise because of all snow and slush on the road. But it seems like a grinding/popping and clicking noise. Its not a loud THUNK like a balljoint would make, its pretty rapid.

Any ideas what it could be?

What year/engine/transmission do you have?

If you feel it under your feet it is likely the front driveshaft. There's a CV joint that often fails from drying out.

stupid question, how do i check those? obviously jack it up, but then what?

I've had cv joint issues before with other vehicles. and its not the normal "clicking". But maybe being a truck its different sounding?

If it was the cv joint, wouldnt it always be doing it since its constantly spinning regarldess of 4wd or not? Also, no difference while turning or not.

Except when you are in 4wd it is under power, not just coasting.

Take the driveshaft out if you want and drive around in 4wd, you can. See if it makes noise.

you can just relpace the cv joint on the front propellar shaft. its like $200 or less and takes all of an hour to change.

How do you tell if its the front driveshaft or the U joint. My neighbor and I are thinking its the U Joint.

Take the front propeller shaft out then you can check it out. It's not hard and you can still drive the truck.
