Hello all.

i have a we bit of a problem with my 2000 dodge dakota sport 4x4.

my old tranny went bad so i baught a new one from the local wreckers they garinteed me it worked great.

well i just finshed installing it top off the flluid checked the lvl its correct at running temp.

problems :

prnd21 all light up with boxes around each
truck jerks into gear
and when in drive it takes me almost full pettle to get the truck to move. it's as if i'm stuck in 3rd gear or accordinglly known as llimp mode

things i've done :
made sure the right amount of fluid was in tranny at operating temp
double checked and tripple checked the wiring for unplugged sensors

this is my first tranny drop and install

check for codes first. Is it the same transmission you took out I'm not sure but there are a couple of different transmission that can be bolted to the motors

my 2001 dakota factory manual. it says to flush ALL cooler lines after a trans faill. and find the check valve and toss it.
man o man i about forgot yes its a cut & past sorry. __________________
after you clean the trans. add this to your*chrysler*trans. an external fluid filter
1. go to auto-zone. get 2210, its called a power steering filter, but it is for transs to. it is for 3/8 tubing. by (magna-fine) be sure to use high pressure hose.
2. for other sizes wix 58964 5/16 tube size

could it be a problem with the transmission check valve? i've read on some forums that could be part of the problem.

i replaced the 2 trans cooler lines from the transmission to the rubber hose c clamped them together that goes into the radiator

the truck jerks into drive and reverse

any help would be great, need the truck back on the road for when i get off layoff for jan 7th

Stop right there.

What year is your truck and what year is the ram?

It's the 545RFE, but there were some wiring and PCM changes I think as they went from the 5 to 5-1/2 speed boxes and other things.

ok you're fine electrically that old, should be same...they didn't start screwing with things till 2003-2006 i think.

That's all I know to provide....I don't know much on the electronic transmissions.

I have a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7 and 45RFE gearbox but I run it with a 04 Grand Cherokee 545RFE controller. Mechanically it works fine and gives me the "extra" 6th gear (as I'm running 4.10 axles).

But........the reason I mention this is that all the lights on the PRND21 light up and I get a fault code that I can't remember right now! Also the overdrive switch stops working.

Just wondering if there's a mismatch between the controllers. Sometimes they might launch new stuff on different years between models, so just because the Ram was a 2000, it might have a different control program to a 2000 Dakota with an identical engine/tranny. I know that 2000/01 was a changeover year for the 45RFE on Dakotas, that's why I get the faults and a 2001-03 doesn't!
