Ok drove it to work today,banging loudly when I turn,no noise going straight.jacked it up,have about 1/8 inch end play in the axles,didnt seem like any up & down movement.Also tried to rotate the driveshaft to see if the u-joints were loose-they werent but there was play in the rear maybe 1/8th of a turn.Acts kinda like it was violently engaging and disengaging,only when turning,then on the way home she popped,driveshaft just spins.

 

Pull that diff cover off. You have spider gears with broken teeth IMO

 

I agree with Magnethead. Your spider gears are toast.

 

Gotta wait for the weekend now,and hope that there isnt much collateral damage

Total carnage,spiders,ring and pinion,carrier,all junk.Very little shrapnel in the case leading me to believe the guy I bought the truck from must've known,cleaned it out filled it with Lucas or something to quiet it down.On the up side the undercarriage is mint-no rust,no bent skid plates,everything is clean and dry.

 

Your best option is a junker a total R/R would cost about $1.400

I called around found only 1 junkyard rear within about 75 miles,an 8.25 in a v6 truck with 200k on it for 500 bucks,no warranty of course so its rebuild time.I ordered new ring and pinion,new posi carrier and install kit,I got the truck for 1900,as clean as it is,
I'm sure I'm better off rebuilding it.

 

probably not a bad route to go. Be careful with the posi carrier is all I have to say. Don't deck it in the middle of the corner!
