It just seems to make sense... only happens after warming then goes away after 15-20 seconds. Engine run great when still hot, all day long.

Compression would show bad performance all of the time.

Timing may not show up until after initial warm up, then be bad the entire time.

Know this: I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I am an engineer by trade and mechanically inclined enough to be dangerous.

Good luck!
seeing as it's laying against the exhaust manifold heat shield bu the looks of it, I'm also wondering if it doesn't go to an upstream sensore. That said, it would be throwing a pile of codes for O2 sensors and O2 heater circuit failures.

Hey Guys, thanks for the great ideas. I've been trying to test them all out with the tools that I have around. When I was under the hood today I noticed that it looks like the gasket on my driver's side valve cover is bulging out. If the gasket is bad, do you think this could explain the symptoms? I noticed it when I was reving the engine
and I noticed some debris being blown around. At first I thought it was just the engine fan doing it but then I noticed this right where I saw the debris blowing.

Thanks!

MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FINALLY DECIDED TO COME ON!!! It's saying it's a P0135 (O2 heater circuit bank 1 sensor 1). Hopefully changing the sensor fixes this!

Thanks for all of the imput guys (and gals)!!!

Had a feeling it might been your O2 sensors, mine backfired till I replaced one.

Bank 1 Sensor 1 is on the driver side BEFORE the catalytic converter.

It's gonna be on the top of the exhaust piping and can be a pain in the *** to get to.

Thanks sxrsil3nt, in that case I think I'll just bring it in and have it done by someone with the proper equipment. I've spend enough time lying on my cold (unheated) garage floor under the truck in the past couple of weeks. I just wish it would have thrown the code 2 weeks ago when the problem started!

It really isn't that difficult of a job to do, but I feel you on that one. The hardest part is getting to the sensor.

If it makes you feel any better, you will really only be paying for the part if you have a good mechanic. Anyone with a lift can change it out in around 20-30 mins easily so labour won't be high at all.

Good luck with your truck!

as far as the dust, you might have an exhaust leak? Really you need to clean upthe bay so you can see what is really going on.
