Default 99 dakota 5.2 tranny / front diff issues

Hello rookie Dodge owner here so I was out plowing the other night after 6 hours the truck did not wanna shift out of 4 low. I couldn't move the **** at all to get into 2wd . The truck did not like this made funny sounds I check tranny fluid it was almost empty front diff and tranny serviced before storm. So I finally become displeased at this point and force the shifter with my boot ,it either bent it or went into rwd back right spun. So my question is why did it get stuck I'm 4 low was it safe mode ? Does the transfer case need to be replaced ?

There's a known issue with the linkage pretty much coming apart under the truck. A few topics over, somebody said they wound up drilling the lever and putting a cotterpin through it. So you might see if that's what happened.

Depends on how bad it is. If it's the linkage that goes to the cab, cheap. If it's the linkage that goes into the transfer case, not cheap at all.
