So for anyone reading this I'm just going to sum it up. Smart move is fill up your tank when it is a 1/4 empty, it keeps your fuel pump happy. When your gauge reads empty your tank has 3 gallons left (no matter the size, I know that from experience). The light comes on when you are 3-5 from the gauge reading "E", if you have a digital overhead display like my truck it comes on when the computer estimates you have approximately 40 miles to the gauge reading "E".

i have been driving chrysler cars/trucks since 1965, a total of 25 different ones. about gas gauges. the 1/2 mark ONLY means it is less than 3/4 and more than 1/4. end of story.

I've noticed this. I have a HUGE overhead above full (~60 miles), a moderate overhead below empty (3 gallons, ~36 miles), and a VERY SHORT duration between Full and Empty. It's like 40% of the range is outside the gauge, and 60% between E and F.

i love the dashes that the needles do a calibration or "needle bounce", it reminds me of driving an 2004+ international durastar (4300 series+) flatbed tow trucks.. IF ANYONE HAS A LEAD ON A DASH LIKE THAT FOR A 2000 DAKOTA, IT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED, PLEASE PM ME WITH THE INFORMATION..

I've had my gas gauge below the red line for E, went to fill it up, still had 3 and a half gallons in the tank... My gas light comes on when I have 8 gallons left, I don't even pay attention to the gauge, Just hit the trip when the light comes on and know I should fill it up before it hits 60 miles (even though it could probably do a 100 miles on that amount don't want to run it too dry).
