Default 1998 dakota no start,no crank!

I was at a stop light and my dodge started sputtering and died, which isn't uncommon in this cold weather. But when i went to start it, it wouldn't crank over. I have power to everything and all i hear is a click when turning the key. I was very low on fuel because i was on my way to the gas station but this wouldn't explain why it wo.t turn over? Could this possibly be the starter went out? Had a guy tell me it could also be the ignition module ?? I know nothing about vehicles so if ya can Please help!!!!

Welcome to the forums.

An "ignition module" would not cause a no-crank condition.

It could be the starter, or the wiring to the starter. It could also be a bad neutral safety switch. Did you try it in park and neutral? If it's a 5 speed, did you have the clutch in?

What engine and trans?

It could be a bad battery too.

Turn on the headlights and try to start it. If they go dim, your battery is bad. If they go out completely, either the battery is bad or one of the battery connections is bad. If they stay bright, the problem is something else.

If you determine that it's a bad battery, make sure you check the charging system. If it's not charging, your new battery won't last a day.

Its a V6, automatic.
This happened once before sitting at a red
light, truck died then wldnt start. After 3 or 4 tries
it fired right up...really strange to me. What is the
neutral safety switch you are talking about?

There is a switch in the transmission, controlled by the shift linkage, that won't allow you to start the truck if it's in gear, only allowing it to crank in P or N. It's a safety device.

The "click" you hear turning the key might be the starter relay, it triggers the starter solenoid. It's located under the hood in the PDC.
